Creating a video selfie should be fun and exciting, so here are a few UnoSelfie tips to help you get started on how to make a stand-out selfie video for you next job application. Remember ! - The beauty of all this is that you are in control. If you don't like it, erase and start over. It's that simple.

Smartphone | Tablet

For active and motion applications - Record with your camera horizontal (landscape) so that your screen looks like a widescreen TV. Try to hold it steady or use a tri-pod or selfie stick for assistance. The closer you are to the phone, the less shaky the video will appear and your audio will be clearer too.

Laptop | Desktop

For stationary applications - Most all laptops and desktops have a built in video camera included in the laptop or monitor. Both Windows and Macs have their own video recording and editing software and are user friendly. Do a couple of practice takes first or until you feel comfortable with the final recording. Do not be intimidated by the process.

Background Check

If you plan to record outdoors, remember to face the sun so that the light brightens up your environment. If you are recording indoors, use a room that’s well-lit with lots of natural sunlight or lighting. Make sure the background isn’t cluttered and showing off your dirty laundry!.

Microphone Check

Find a quiet area or room and shut down all devices that make sounds. Don’t forget about pets or children that could cause any interruptions. Speak directly into the microphone and stand as close to it as possible to get the best audio recording. To amplfy the audio you can also use an external mic to help with the voice enhancement.

5 seconds rule

If you intend to put words on the screen (titles) or on white boards, make sure to show them long enough for someone to read which is at least 5 seconds or probably longer.

Dress for the job

The best clothing option for on-camera is a solid-color long-sleeve shirt, sweater or jacket. Select a primary color instead of patterns or prints. Jewel tones and pastels are better than white for the camera. Don’t wear jewelry that moves and makes noise. Do a couple of practice takes, until you get comfortable with the attire you want to present yourself in the video.

Record in the .mp4 format

Most common and preferred file type for video is .mp4 format. Other formats such as .mov, .3gp and .wmv will work, but not as widely used. Many devices come with video editing apps or software. It’s best to convert them to .mp4 which is easy to do by downloading video converter software.

Center of the frame

Put your computer’s video camera at eye level. Looking down at the camera will make your chin and neck look disproportionate to your face. Frame yourself in the middle of the screen so that there is not too much space above your head (headroom). Make sure to put on your happy face!
